The Balearic Islands occupy an enviable position in the Mediterranean sea, off the coast of North East Spain. Formed from some 50 islands, there are three which are major tourist destinations. Mallorca is the largest of the islands and contains the Balearic capital, Palma while the smallest of the three is Ibiza, one of the clubbing capitals of the world. In the middle is Menorca and it enjoys a reputation as the most unspoilt of the three. In its luxury hotels, Menorca displays all the charm, elegance, and seclusion for which the island is renowned.
Beach life is important to Mallorca and Ibiza and they form major summer beach holiday destinations as a result. For those looking to incorporate a more exclusive beach aspect into their holiday however, there is Menorca. With over 100 excellent beaches there is plenty to choose from, including long sandy stretches ideal for water sports and family activities to secluded coves, perfect for relaxing in quiet solitude or as a starting point to explore and uncover the natural riches of the island.
Many of the luxury hotels Menorca has are to be found in some of the most stunning locations around the dramatic coastline of the island. Often with wonderful sea views and a range of water sports and coastal activities, these premier hotels certainly make the most of the natural environment. Exploring the Menorca coast is easy, the island is relatively small and boat trips represent an excellent way to discover many hidden coastal gems.
The rugged north coast of Menorca is best suited for boat trips and offers many scenic spots to moor and enjoy an intimate picnic, some exploring or diving. Towards the south coast of the island are the main holiday resorts and family beaches. Although popular, the beaches and beach resorts of Menorca are rarely over-crowded. Notable resorts on the south coast include Cala en Porter, Punta Prima, S'Algar, Binebeca, Son Bou, and Santo Tomas. Many of the larger beaches and resorts offer a full complement of family and beach activities and there is a wealth of amenities, bars, cafes, restaurants and shops at, or near, the beach.
In the locations of many of its luxury hotels, Menorca places a beach holiday experience as a priority but some of the best luxury hotels and resorts are to be found inland too and are well placed to access some of the islands rich history. Menorca has been occupied for many thousands of years and has more ancient and historical remains than any other Mediterranean location, with many ancient burial grounds, monuments and standing stones which permeate the countryside. Stone is Menorcas most readily available material and the dry stone walls fashioned from it meander through the open land and add to the picturesque landscape.
The rich culture of Menorca has been influenced throughout the ages by successions of peoples from the Romans, and Moors, to the French and British, and the result can only be defined as uniquely Menorquin. An enduring love affair with horses has given rise to many of the island's celebrations and activities which invariably incorporate horses and riding pursuits. Skilled horsemanship is most evident within the town festivals held throughout the year but anyone with a desire to explore the wonderful countryside of Menorca on horseback will have plenty of opportunities to do so.
While horse riding offers a novel way to take in the beautiful Menorquin countryside, walking and cycling are popular too and within its luxury hotels, Menorca visitor information and services are freely available to encourage guests to make the most of their time on the island. Recommended places to visit include Monte Toro, the island's highest point and best spot for superb panoramic views, and the Museo de Minorca, displaying the islands rich cultural history through a prized collection of art and artefacts. The museum building is impressive too, a 15th century former Franciscan Monastery.
Of the eight regions which comprise Menorca the most notable are Mao, Cuitadella, and Alaior. The capital Mao, or Mahon has a natural deep water port which is a popular tourist attraction and is also home to many bars, restaurants, cafes, shops, entertainment, and some of the best luxury hotels Menorca possesses. The former capital Cuitadella is popular too and Alaior, as the home to many of the islands local crafts and manufacturing.
As an island, dining in Menorca often involves seafood and there are some excellent local seafood specialities worth sampling in the island's many fine restaurants. Within all of its luxury hotels Menorca cooking and cuisine take centre stage and often a range of dining environments are available, from sophisticated high-end dining to snacks such as Bocadillos, or fresh crusty bread sandwiches, by the poolside. Tapas is an additional favourite with visitors and is generally available.
The luxury hotels of Menorca are often incorporated within all-inclusive resorts where families can enjoy luxury accommodation, meals and entertainment. Within other luxury hotels, Menorca sports and water activities are more common. Often the luxury hotels Menorca has will offer a range of sporting and leisure facilities which may include tennis, golf, horse riding, and sometimes a fully equipped fitness suite. The top hotels will also offer a range of facilities and services to combine business with pleasure and will incorporate every technology and amenity within the rooms and suites. Service within the luxury hotels will be typically Menorquin, with every detail effortlessly taken care of.
